Abstract

This chapter addresses how care work is done in talk in institutional settings. The chapter reviews previous conversation analytic research on care work in a range of institutional and workplace settings including emergency telephone calls, mediation sessions, air traffic communication, medical interactions, and psychotherapy. The focus of this review is on the techniques through which care work is conducted, how it is integrated into the interaction, and how the goals and tasks of the specific institutional/workplace context impact how care work is done. The chapter ends with a discussion of directions for future research into care work.
