Abstract
In Gabriel Over the White House (1932), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), and Talk of the Town (1942), public edifices of the three branches of the U.S. government become places of personal transformation, as the male protagonists come to private realizations that help them take on new public roles in Roosevelt’s expanded welfare state.
