Abstract
The rock band U2 is among the most prolific musical acts of the past four decades, having released twelve studio albums in addition to numerous singles and b-sides. U2’s music is richly woven with images of place. Reference to geography ranges from implicit to explicit, and includes locations on six continents. Places as diverse as Ethiopia, El Salvador, New Zealand, Chile, and China are featured in the band’s lyrics, while mention of locations in the United States and Europe are most abundant. This paper examines the intersection of geography and music by analyzing the spatial dimension of the band’s lyrics through both qualitative and quantitative lenses.
